Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve tried our best to answer some of the questions we’ve received. If there’s something we’ve missed, please do get in touch with us. We love starting conversations with youth programs and seeing where they lead.

What is CES?

CES is a YouthREX service funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Aimed at supporting the evaluation journey of grassroots youth serving and youth led initiatives across the province, CES provides free one on one support, resources and capacity building on evaluation and related activities.

We want to support organizations better understand, track, measure and share the outcomes and impact of their programs. We hope that the insights gained through relevant and accessible evaluation processes will help strengthen youth programs and the wellbeing of youth in our communities!

What organizations are eligible for CES?

Grassroots youth serving and youth-led initiatives throughout Ontario are eligible for CES.

CES-eligible programs are usually small.  Generally, these programs do not have core program funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and may not have the resources to evaluate their programs.

To check if your organization is eligible, simply fill out this quick online form and we will review it within a week and let you know if you are eligible or not.

You can also call us at 1-844-876-5433 to discuss your evaluation needs with us.

How much of a time commitment is required to participate in CES?

While the CES process does require a time commitment from individual(s) at your organization we recognize that this will vary with each organization/program. We know that time, capacity and resources can be scarce, so we will work with you to develop a feasible plan that can also include graduate students and additional supports to ensure that the evaluation plan you develop can be successfully implemented.

How can your organization apply for CES?

Fill out this quick online form and we will review it within a week and let you know if you are eligible or not.

What exactly do we mean by an evaluation of a youth program?

We define evaluation of a youth program as a systematic set of activities carried out towards understanding how, why, and to what extent a youth program supports intended positive changes in the lives of young people.

Why is evaluation of youth programs important?

We know that grassroots youth programs provide youth with the skills and resources they need to overcome challenging circumstances so that they can make positive contributions to our communities. Here at YouthREX, we believe that evaluation plays an integral role in supporting youth programs to be reflective and open to improvement, while also providing key insights on the positive impact they have on the lives of the youth and communities they serve. Evaluation can also support grassroots initiatives in better demonstrating and sharing their impact – something we know can be challenging.  We hope to work with organizations in developing useful and meaningful evaluation strategies that support these needs.

What is our approach to working with organizations?

YouthREX is committed to providing your organization with Customized Evaluation Supports (CES) that reflect six standards that make up our Evaluation Service Pledge:

  • We will meet your organization where your evaluation capacity is.
  • We will be responsive to your organization’s evaluation needs.
  • We will work collaboratively with your organization to co-create evaluation processes that make sense for your organization.
  • We will adhere to high ethical standards.
  • We will support your organization to meaningfully engage youth in your evaluation processes.
  • We will to listen and listen more to your organization.

If we don’t deliver services that reflect these standards, please let us know. We welcome feedback and promise to respond quickly to all your comments!

What other ways can YouthREX support youth programs?

Our Customized Evaluation Supports complement and build upon two other YouthREX objectives: Knowledge Mobilization and Capacity Building. All our services in these areas are geared towards YouthREX’s mission, which is to make research evidence and evaluation practices accessible and relevant to Ontario’s grassroots youth sector through capacity building, knowledge mobilization and evaluation leadership. Activities include workshops, webinars, accessible resources and more.

Is there a cost for Customized Evaluation Supports?

No! If you are eligible, CES supports are free of charge.

What can you expect after you have applied for CES?

Check out a visual of the process here! Basically, we will get to know you, do some discovery work so we’re both on the same page, develop a tailored CES plan for your organization and support your organization in executing it. We provide resources and help along the way, and afterwards as well. We want to help capture, share and strengthen the legacy of your program!

What if your youth program is not eligible for CES?

If your youth program is not eligible for free Customized Evaluation Supports, we encourage you to access our other resources. We offer workshops, webinars, and other opportunities to build skills, learn, and connect with other youth sector organizations.

We also offer an online Program Evaluation Certificate and an Evaluation Toolkit. These are all free and available to everyone with no eligibility requirements.

If you are a youth organization, we might be able to provide you with CES on a fee for service basis. If you are interested in this fee for service option, please contact us to discuss this
