This webinar was hosted by the Social Planning Network of Ontario in partnership with YouthREX.

HERE’S HOW THE HOSTS DESCRIBE THIS WEBINAR:

The Social Planning Network of Ontario (SPNO) Community of Practice on Equity and Inclusion for Low-Income Students and Families is pleased to be partnering with leading experts and voices in the field to bring you this unique webinar series that looks at the impacts of poverty and classism on low-income students and their families.

This webinar features a discussion/presentation with Dr. Carl James and Yvonne Kelly, MSW, that interrupts commonly-held misconceptions about parent/caregiver engagement in our schools. It highlights the often misunderstood barriers experienced by lower-income and racialized parents and caregivers; left unchecked, these barriers can lead to greater gaps between home and school for some of our most underserved learners. Participants are challenged to look at their own biases with respect to lower-income and racialized parents and caregivers, which can directly and indirectly contribute to disengagement. Recommendations are discussed in terms of implementing authentic and meaningful opportunities for engagement.
