The Tree of Life: An Intercultural, Collective, and Multi-Identity Affirming Experience for Youth Workers

Youth Research & Evaluation eXchange (“YouthREX”)

This free, in-person workshop will introduce youth workers to the Tree of Life, a culturally affirming and trauma-informed narrative therapy approach developed by Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo in collaboration with David Denborough.

Rooted in African Indigenous wisdom and guided by the principles of Imbeleko, Sankofa, and Ubuntu, the Tree of Life is a storytelling, narrative-based workshop that invites participants to explore their identities, strengths, and stories of survival through the powerful metaphor of a tree.

Facilitated by Special Guests Shayla S. Dube and Noreen Sibanda, this communal process centres collective care, cultural humility, and narrative dignity — creating space for diverse, multi-identity voices to be heard and valued.

Participants will leave with:

  • A deepened understanding of their personal and collective strengths.
  • Practical tools for narrating their experiences in ways that honour resilience and avoid re-traumatization.
  • A renewed sense of connection to their cultural and ancestral wisdom.

Together, we will reflect on our roots, what grounds us today, the strengths we carry, the people who shape us, and the dreams we hold — while honouring the storms we’ve weathered.

More than a workshop, this is a celebration of belonging, a gathering of stories, and a vision of healing that centres community and liberation.

Space is limited – apply to join us today!
