A Healing Space for Black Social Workers, Therapists & Child/Youth Workers

The University of Toronto Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work (FIFSW) Alumni Association Event Series 2023-2024 presents a workshop by Amma Gyamfowa, BSW, MSW, RSW: “Fried Kokoo for the Mind & Soul”!

Fried Kokoo for the Mind & Soul explores Black mental health and well-being through the analogy of fried plantain. Adapted for diverse ages, the Fried Kokoo series has been dynamically delivered to over 500 attendees in Canada, Ghana, and the United States.

  • Reduces cultural stigmas/myths on mental health
  • Provides psychoeducation on mental health and wellness
  • Addresses systemic oppression, as well as racial/intergenerational trauma

About the speaker:

Amma Gyamfowa is a Ghanaian-Canadian mental health therapist, registered social worker, community researcher, writer and international speaker. Engaged in the field of social work for ten years, her expertise is rooted in supporting and counseling Black communities. Through designing educational community wellness workshops, she cultivates culturally affirming mental health supports through an Afrocentric approach with powerful culturally affirming analogies and resources. Founder and Lead Clinical Therapist of Womanist Healing and Co-Founder of Ghana’s Ohemaa Fest and The Healing Retreat, Amma is determined to create empowering holistic resources that strengthen Black communities’ abilities to heal, thrive and connect.

This workshop offers a Black centered space of healing for Black social work practitioners. All FIFSW alumni, students, faculty and members of the public are invited and welcome to attend and participate.
