Parliamentary Internship for the Environment Program

Environmental Leadership Canada (ELC)

The Parliamentary Internship for the Environment program is open now for applications!

This program by Environmental Leadership Canada (ELC) is in its 7th year and places young environmental leaders on Parliament Hill for paid, full-time, ten-month internships with Members of Parliament from all national parties. Interns gain a deep understanding of the day-to-day workings of Canadian Parliament, a behind-the-scenes look at the policymaking process, and learn from some of Canada’s top environmental changemakers. But that’s not all, our internship program also offers a range of opportunities – interns will meet with expert guest speakers through fireside chats, attend workshops, and conferences, and engage in interjurisdictional and constituency travel.

We’re looking for young Indigenous leaders, aged 18-30, who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit and Métis, who are passionate about politics and the environment. No political experience or specific level of education is required. This program runs from approximately September 2024 to June 2025 and comes with a stipend of $29,000 CAD. In addition to the general stream, PIE has two specialized streams: The Sustainable Agriculture stream pairs youth from Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) with climate champions on Parliament Hill. The Indigenous stream selects from a nation-wide pool of self-identified First Nations, Metis, and Inuit leaders, with the goal to break down the systemic barriers Indigenous individuals face in Parliament Hill and support the development of Indigenous-led policy. The features of this stream were designed in collaboration with current and past Indigenous PIE Interns, Future Ancestor Services, and ELC, including the wraparound support to ensure participants can thrive and succeed.

We hope you will consider applying! Applications are due by 11:59 pm (EST) on April 28th, 2024. More information about the program can be found here, and the application form can be found here.
