This TEDx Talk will be about the importance of considering race, gender, sexuality, etc. when mentoring young people so that we can engage them in more relevant ways. My book Critical Mentoring: A Practical Guide will guide the talk, pointing out that we are mentoring in a society that requires we deal with a pretty problematic context. We must shift the paradigm in mentoring from one that fixes young people to one that helps them fix the world.

Dr. Torie Weiston-Serdan is a scholar-practitioner with over twelve years of teaching and youth programming experience. She is the author of Critical Mentoring: A Practical Guide and does extensive work with community-based organizations in support of their youth advocacy efforts; specializing in training mentors to work with diverse marginalized youth populations.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
