HERE’S HOW THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THIS FACTSHEET:
Allyship can be a powerful tool in the fight against anti-Black racism and other forms of oppression. However, there are many misconceptions about what it truly means to be an ally, especially in the context of anti-Black racism. Many believe that simply identifying as an ally is enough, but effective allyship requires more than a self-proclaimed title.
Allyship involves the active and intentional efforts of people in privileged groups to advocate in solidarity with communities experiencing marginalization. This requires emotional, intellectual, and social labour. When allies recognize and challenge their privilege and use their power and influence, they can help create pathways to solidarity and justice.
This factsheet provides practical actions for becoming a more effective ally in the fight against anti-Black racism. By understanding the fundamental principles of allyship, non-Black individuals can better support Black youth, families, and communities – and contribute to lasting change and progress.
This factsheet expands on another resource, How You Can Be An Ally in Working Against Anti-Asian Racism, building on the universal concept of allyship and applying it specifically to the Black community, and summarizing practical actions for non-Black allies in their efforts to combat anti-Black racism.
